das buchlabor â€” institut für buchforschung (i. gr.) (institute for book research) at the university of applied sciences and arts dortmund presents the exhibition on books and photography — what defines the photobook? as a part of the series dialoge über bücher (dialogues on books). students, artists, photographers, designers and scientists are kindly invited to submit their contributions. selected works will be shown during the exhibition in the dortmunder u — zentrum für kunst und kreativität (centre for art and creativity), uzwei_kulturelle bildung (cultural education) from november 2016 onwards.

in the discussion on media, the term photobook is used naturally, especially in the field of photography — but as it turns out, a universal definition does not exist, neither in science nor as a genre. the research project examines the relation between the book as a medium and the visual medium of photography as an exceptional connection, analysing the formal aspects of the book body, the canon of materials and their technical implementation. in a process-based research, with no predetermined outcome, we are going to create a catalogue of criteria, in order to apply and publish it, to classify and evaluate a ›book with photographs‹.

by selected contributions we are going to show individual solutions to the hybrid medium photobook. which kind of synergy arises between photography and the book body in your work? which specific references are made? we are looking forward to receiving your work until the 16th of september 2016.
