With Braakland (Fallow Fields) FOMU transforms its top floor into a fertile breeding ground for photography. We acknowledge the need for a discursive space that embraces the medium of photography in its multiplicity and its complexity. With challenging exhibitions, public talks, debates, one-evening events, portfolio days, screenings, and dozens of collaborations we aim to tackle photography’s diversity.

This seven month program will include exhibitions by both national and international photographers and curators, as well as multiple different non-exhibition projects. However, a large portion of the program will remain ‘under construction’ as long as possible: FOMU launches a museum takeoveraimed at independent photographers, collectives, curators, writers, critics, scholars, academies, nonprofit organizations and institutions.

Braakland wants to function as a space where dialogue between artists and their audience is crucial. It considers the exhibition platform as a first statement, where public involvement is a necessity.Braakland wishes to facilitate an in-depth study of the medium of photography towards a broad audience.

FOMU’s top floor will be divided into 3 spaces in which Braakland will take place. Spaces will be open all the time to enhance interaction with the public, also during build-up. Walls will be white and built up to the ceiling, thus creating spaces that function as entities in their own right, that are multi-functional, serving both as exhibition and project spaces.

The exhibitions programmed within the framework of Braakland aim to present both national and international artists, that are embedded in the now of photography. We’re not looking for formalistic experiments, but want to encourage free thinking within the exhibition space, embracing the particularities and the specificity of the photograph and the photographer. Exhibitions already scheduled include a group exhibition curated by Aaron Schuman on emerging artists from the USA and a ‘mapping-exhibition’ curated by Fannie Escoulen and Nicolás Combarro on Spanish photography in times of crisis.

Apart from exhibitions Braakland will also host some extensive projects such as portfolio days, workshops,  a photobook-weekend and a strictly-for-photographers-event. These will encourage others to participate and aim at engaging the local, national and international photography scene.

However, most of the BRAAKLAND space will remain open, to be filled in by YOU. With BraaklandFOMU launches a true museum takeover, aimed at everybody with a heart for photography and with a proposal for a project to happen within one of the exhibition spaces.
